What is this book about?

Beginning Web Programming with HTML, XHTML, and CSS teaches you how to write Web pages using HTML, XHTML, and CSS. It follows standards–based principles, but also teaches readers ways around problems they are likely to face using (X)HTML.

While XHTML is the “current” standard, the book still covers HTML because many people do not yet understand that XHTML is the official successor to HTML, and many readers will still stick with HTML for backward compatibility and simpler/informal Web pages that don′t require XHTML compliance.

The book teaches basic principles of usability and accessibility along the way, to get users into the mode of developing Web pages that will be available to as many viewers as possible from the start. The book also covers the most commonly used programming/scripting language — JavaScript — and provides readers with a roadmap of other Web technologies to learn after mastering this book to add more functionality to their sites.

From the Back Cover
As the Web has evolved, tools and methods for creating Web pages have also changed and matured. This book teaches you to create Web sites using a combination of new and mature technologies and shows you the best practices that have emerged for using these technologies.

In these pages you will learn to build Web sites with traditional HTML and its successor XHTML. You will see how CSS can be used to make your Web pages more attractive by controlling the presentation and formatting of pages, and how to use JavaScript™ to enhance the power of your pages. Along the way you will learn how to make your pages work in several generations of Web browsers, including new Web–enabled devices such as mobile phones. You′ll also learn techniques that make your site more usable and accessible.

What you will learn from this book

•How to create Web sites using established standards
•The differences between HTML and its successor XHTML
•How to include images and links in your pages
•Methods of collecting information from visitors to your site using forms
•Ways to control the appearance of your pages (such as fonts, colors, and backgrounds) using CSS
•How to use tables, frames, and CSS to control page layout
•Design issues such as creating simple navigation and usable forms
•How to deliver Web pages to a wide range of devices
•The basics of using JavaScript in your pages

Who this book is for

This book is for anyone who wants to understand the language of the Web and learn to create Web pages. You should know how to access and view Web pages with a browser, but previous programming experience is not necessary.

Wrox Beginning guides are crafted to make learning programming languages and technologies easier than you think, providing a structured tutorial format that will guide you through all the techniques involved.

About the Author
John W. Gosney is currently the director of information technology for the Indiana University School of Dentistry. He is also associate faculty for the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts, where he teaches a variety of literature and English courses, including a course that focuses on literature for adolescents: this course highlights the uniquely adolescent themes that can often be found in any work of fiction, regardless of genre or subject. Through the use of novel pedagogies (including the integration of problem-based learning) John encourages his students – many of whom will be secondary education teachers – to consider and explore the “teen themes” that can be found in any work of fiction, and to thus specifically interpret these texts for a younger audience. Through his teaching and research, John is also interested in how technology – especially Web-based technologies – can further enhance the delivery of curriculum to both secondary and post-secondary students, across a broad spectrum of subjects and issues.

John received his B.A. in technical writing and psychobiology from Purdue University. In 1996, he was awarded an M.A. in English from Butler University. When not working, he enjoys spending time with his family that, along with two young boys, just happens to include a precocious twelve-year-old “pre-teen” daughter thus keeping John acutely interested and in touch with how young people are using technology to communicate with their peers and (it is hoped!) better communicate with their

HTML 4 Bible

Book Details

Paperback: 743 pages
Publisher: Wiley; 2 edition (January 15, 2000)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0764534734
ISBN-13: 978-0764534737

In HTML 4 Bible, you'll find a comprehensive definition of what is considered state of the art in Web-publishing languages. The book explains HTML tags and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) thoroughly, and it gives some attention to JavaScript as well.
Authors Pfaffenberger and Gutzman use a helpful problem-and-solution format that provides straightforward answers to common problems--they show you how to build image maps and create attractive forms, to cite two examples.

What's special about the book's approach is that it doesn't get sidetracked by the universe of detail that HTML 4 presents. Rather than choosing to ploddingly document the characteristics of one tag after another, Pfaffenberger and Gutzman explain their subject by describing how it is applied in practice. They explain, for example, how to arrange textual data so that people are more likely to read it.

The downside to this holistic approach is that HTML 4 Bible isn't the absolutely comprehensive HTML reference many readers will expect it to be. Books like that exist, and you may want to supplement HTML 4 Bible with one of them. But if you want a text that provides informed explanations of how to get the results you want with HTML, this book is for you. --David Wall --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description
HTML 4 Bible, 2nd Edition is your comprehensive reference to the latest standard for Web page construction. Build internet and intranet documents that are fully compliant with the rules of HTML 4.01, making them suitable for inclusion in xHTML applications. Once they're in xHTML, they can be integrated with SMIL, MathML, and SVG technologies to create full-featured Web applications.

The book's CD-ROM holds the Amaya, Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator and Opera web browsers, allowing you to readily test your pages for cross-browser compliance. Also on the CD-ROM is TidyHTML, the best tool for validating your 4.01 source code.

The Weekend Crash Course series consists of 30 sessions over a period of three days. Each session is designed to take 30 minutes to complete, so the Crash Course is an intense 15-hour learning period beginning on Friday evening and ending on Sunday afternoon. Naturally, you can adapt your learning to whatever schedule best suits your needs.

HTML 4.01 Weekend Crash Course is written to meet the needs of the reader who is new to HTML and new to scripting and mark-up languages. However, through the use of carefully constructed roadmaps at the beginning of each session as well as pre- and post-assessment software on the CD-ROM, the book is also quite accessible to the reader who already has some knowledge of HTML or another scripting language.

Why settle for average HTML, when you can become a master of it? Markup is the fabric that holds the web together, but most people only scratch the surface of what can be achieved using (X)HTML.

That's where this unique book comes in--it's aimed at web designers and developers who have already mastered the basics of HTML and web design, but want to take their markup further, making it leaner and more semantically rich, for a more efficient, more usable/accessible web site.

HTML Mastery does all that and more, showing all of the HTML tags available, including less commonly used ones, where and how to use them, and clever styling and scripting techniques that you can employ to take advantage of them on your web site. It is totally standards compliant, up to date with modern web design techniques. Forms and Tables are looked in particular detail, as there is so much that can be done with them.

In addition, the book also looks at some of the advanced semantic tools that look to further improve the usability and semantic value of your sites--an entire chapter is devoted to Microformats, and a nod is given to XHTML 2.0 and Web Applications 1.0--web standards of the future.

This book is a great help for Webmaster and Internet application developer. This book is easy to use and easy to understand (the great help for it are many samples).

The only thing what lack's this book is the notes for every tag or function about the browser. Because we all know, that some tags and functions we use only for MSIE and some only for NN. This is a little bit confusing to try run on NN a tag, what should be used only for MSIE.
